What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is an NDIS funding category that supports people with disability who require high levels of support or have extreme functional impairment, and who need purpose-built or significantly modified housing to meet their needs.
SDA funding can be used for the development or modification of suitable living arrangements — including modifications to an existing home, construction of a new home, or the creation of shared housing or group home arrangements that meet the specific requirements of the participant. The program aims to give participants access to safe, appropriate, and affordable housing options that promote independence and social inclusion in the community.
It is important to note that SDA is not available to all NDIS participants. Eligibility is determined through the NDIS planning process and is reserved for participants with the highest support needs. If you are unsure whether your participant may be eligible, an Occupational Therapist can assist in gathering the functional evidence needed to support an SDA request.
How can an Occupational Therapist help with SDA?
Occupational Therapists play a central role in the SDA assessment process. They provide the functional evidence needed to demonstrate why a participant requires specialist accommodation, and what design features or modifications are necessary to meet their assessed needs.
During an SDA assessment, the Occupational Therapist will typically:
Assess functional capacity and independence
Evaluate the participant’s mobility, functional transfers, and ability to perform activities of daily living including showering, grooming, dressing, and meal preparation. This assessment establishes a clear picture of what the participant can do independently, what they require assistance with, and what level of environmental support is needed.
Conduct a comprehensive home assessment
Assess the participant’s current living environment to identify barriers to safe and independent functioning. The Occupational Therapist will provide clinical recommendations for modifications or adaptations to the home environment based on the participant’s specific needs and goals.
Recommend assistive technology and equipment
Provide advice and prescriptions for assistive technology and adaptive equipment — such as wheelchairs, hoists, ceiling tracking systems, and other devices — that could improve the participant’s safety, independence, and quality of life within their accommodation.
Prepare clinical documentation for NDIS
Compile a detailed functional assessment report outlining the participant’s physical, cognitive, and functional abilities, their identified support needs, and clinical justification for SDA funding. A well-evidenced OT report is one of the most important elements of a successful SDA application.
