Home Modifications and Occupational Therapy
As Australia’s older population continues to grow, the ability to remain living safely and independently at home for as long as possible has never been more important. Home modifications are one of the most effective ways to make this possible — not only for older adults, but also for participants living with health conditions, movement disorders, or cognitive decline.
What is a home modification?
A home modification is a change made to the home environment to improve safety, accessibility, and independence. Modifications range from simple additions such as grab rails and improved lighting, through to more complex structural changes such as bathroom or kitchen renovations. The goal is always the same: to create a better fit between a participant’s functional capacity and their physical environment, so that daily activities can be performed safely and with confidence.
How can an Occupational Therapist help?
Occupational Therapists assess each participant’s individual needs and observe how they perform daily activities within their own home. They identify barriers to safe and independent performance, and work with the participant to discuss practical solutions and strategies tailored to their specific situation.
For example, a grab rail installed in the shower recess or next to the toilet can provide essential support for a participant who experiences difficulty balancing during personal care. A handrail along internal or external stairs can improve safety during everyday movement around the home. For participants who use a wheelchair as their primary means of mobility, an accessible ramp may be recommended to allow safe and independent entry and exit.
The Occupational Therapist documents their findings and recommendations in a formal home modification report, which can be used to support funding applications under the AT-HM Scheme, NDIS, or other relevant programs.
Examples of minor home modifications
- Grab rails — shower, toilet, and entry and exit points
- Internal handrails for access pathways and stairs
- External handrails for steps and ramps
- Lever tap supply and installation
- Furniture adjustments — bed and furniture raising
- Step additions or amendments
- Door widening
- Bidet installation
Examples of complex home modifications
- Full bathroom modification to create a level-access shower with ample circulation space
- Full kitchen modification to create a height-adjustable benchtop with accessibility to all appliances and amenities
Funding for home modifications
Home modifications may be funded through the AT-HM Scheme under Support at Home, the NDIS, CHSP, or private funding. Our Occupational Therapists can advise on the most appropriate pathway based on your participant’s current approvals and circumstances.
