With the rollout of the Support at Home Program, several important updates have been introduced to help older people access the Assistive Technology (AT) they need to remain safe, independent and supported at home. One of the most significant changes relates to the High Funding Tier AT, which now allows eligible participants to request funding above the nominal $15,000 cap.
🆕 New Forms for AT Applications
Since the program’s launch in November, Assistive Technology Funding Request Form has been introduced for service providers to request a pre-approval for AT above the $15,000nominal allocation.
💡 Understanding the AT High Tier Nominal Cap
Under the AT-HM Scheme, the AT High Funding Tier has a nominal funding allocation of $15,000, BUT this is not a strict cap. The Support at Home Program Manual states:
“High tier assistive technology is not capped at $15,000. Participants who have assistive technology costs above $15,000 can access additional funding with evidence, such as a valid prescription.”
This ensures that older people with complex needs can receive the right AT without being limited by a hard financial ceiling.
📝 Applying for AT Funding Above $15,000
1. Obtain Participant Consent
Before applying, ensure the participant (or their representative) consents to the application and understands the process.
2. Prepare Evidence
The AT-HM Scheme Guidelines require specific supporting documents:
- Item description(s)
- Professional prescription(s) from a qualified clinician
- Quotes (single or multiple, depending on procurement rules)
- Explanation of cumulative AT costs exceeding $15,000
- Clinical justification based on the participant’s assessed needs
You will also ensure that the item is included in the AT-HM List.
3. Lodge the AT Funding Request Form
Upload the completed form and evidence to the participant’s record in the My Aged Care Service and Support Portal.
4. Validate the Submission
Once the request is uploaded, you need to contact My Aged Care service provider and assessor helpline 1800 836 799 to validate the submission for processing.
5. Receive Outcome Notification
Once the decision is made by the Department, you will receive an email notification advising whether the request has been approved or declined. Services Australia is notified of approved claims to enable payment.
